Purple And Clay: Part of the 99

If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them wanders away, what will he do? Won’t he leave the ninety-nine others on the hills and go out to search for the one that is lost?  And if he finds it, I tell you the truth, he will rejoice over it more than over the ninety-nine that didn’t wander away!  In the same way, it is not my heavenly Father’s will that even one of these little ones should perish.’’- Matthew 18:12-14

I have read this bible passage so many times, but the last time I read it, I realised that the owner of the sheep was probably more worried about the one that went astray than the 99 because the 99 were in community but the 1 had no covering. We are safest in community.

Our Christian journey is not something we are supposed to navigate by ourselves, away from community. We are made to be a part of the church which is the body of Christ. So when we wander away or choose to do our own thing, we put ourselves at risk.

I found God in University. I grew up in a Christian home, but it was only when I got to University that I truly started experiencing what a relationship with God through Jesus really is. Being a part of a church and campus fellowships, has really helped my walk with God. In some conversations I have had with people, they seem to not know the importance of being part of a church or part of the Christian community on their campus. Technology and the internet is great, it helps us connect with people and learn more about our faith from different podcasts. However, listening to sermons online and following your favourite preacher on twitter is not the same as being part of a community.  That  is why, wherever we are, wherever we find ourselves it is important to search for other members of the Christian community and be a part of them for there is strength in community and it is within community that we can be secured and grounded even more.

If you feel like the one sheep that has wandered away, probably because the other 99 sheep hurt you, or you started having more revelation than the 99 and felt like you don’t need them to grow, or you feel like you don’t fit in with the 99 or the 99 don’t get you, the Father is coming after you. He knows that if you are away from the 99, you will be lost or perish. So no matter how far away you have gone, He is calling out to you to come home.

Find a Christian community around you and be a part of it. You were not designed to grown in your relationship with Jesus away from community.
